Aberdare is a historic town in the Cynon Valley of south Wales, situated where the Rivers Cynon and Dare meet. The town expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution through coal mining, ironworking and related industries, becoming an important industrial and commercial centre for the surrounding valleys.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Aberdare's history is closely connected with the South Wales coalfield, and surviving industrial landscapes and historic buildings reflect the town's role in the development of the Welsh valleys. Aberdare Park provides an attractive green space close to the town centre, with landscaped gardens, woodland and recreational facilities.

The surrounding Cynon Valley offers opportunities for walking and cycling, while nearby attractions include Dare Valley Country Park, which occupies a former industrial landscape and provides trails, woodland and outdoor activities. The Brecon Beacons and wider South Wales Valleys are also within easy reach.

Food and shopping

Aberdare has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, supermarkets, independent retailers and local markets. Welsh lamb, beef, cheeses and traditional bakery products feature in the regional food culture, alongside the diverse cuisine of the South Wales Valleys. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring Dare Valley and the surrounding hills, while Aberdare's industrial heritage and cultural facilities provide year-round interest.
