Alston is a small historic market town in the North Pennines, situated at a high elevation near the borders of Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland. The town developed around lead mining and the transport of minerals from the surrounding hills. Its remote setting and traditional stone architecture give it a distinctive character within northern England.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

The surrounding landscape preserves many reminders of the area's mining past, including old mine workings and industrial remains. The South Tynedale Railway provides heritage train journeys through the scenic valley towards Slaggyford. Alston is also well placed for exploring the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its moorland landscapes, rivers and walking routes.

Food and leisure

The town has traditional pubs, cafes and small independent businesses serving both residents and visitors. Local produce and hearty northern dishes are well suited to the upland environment. Summer is generally the most comfortable season for walking and sightseeing, while the town's remote atmosphere makes it appealing throughout the year.
