An Gearasdan, commonly known in English as Fort William, is a major town in the Scottish Highlands on the shores of Loch Linnhe. It lies at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, and is one of Scotland's principal centres for outdoor tourism. The town developed around a seventeenth-century fort and later became an important centre for transport, trade and tourism in the western Highlands. Today it provides a base for mountaineering, walking, cycling, skiing and exploring the surrounding lochs and glens. The dramatic landscapes around Fort William make it particularly attractive from spring through autumn, while winter brings opportunities for skiing at nearby Nevis Range.
