Appleby-in-Westmorland is a historic market town in the Eden Valley and the former county town of Westmorland. The town stands on the River Eden and has a long history dating back to the medieval period. Its population is around 3,200, but its historic importance and attractive setting give it significance well beyond its size. The surrounding landscape lies between the Lake District and the North Pennines and is characterised by hills, farmland and traditional villages.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Appleby Castle is the town's principal historic landmark and dates back to the medieval period. The old town contains attractive stone buildings, historic churches and traditional market streets, while the River Eden provides a scenic setting for walks. Appleby is also famous for Appleby Horse Fair, a major annual gathering with centuries of history. The surrounding Eden Valley, Westmorland Dales and nearby Pennine landscapes provide extensive opportunities for walking, cycling and nature tourism.

Food and leisure

The town has traditional pubs, cafés, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops offering regional products and British cuisine. Local food is strongly connected with the farming traditions of Cumbria and Westmorland. Spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the countryside, historic sites and walking routes, while the Horse Fair brings a major influx of visitors in June. Appleby is an excellent rural stop between Penrith, the Yorkshire Dales and the northern Lake District.
