Ayr is the administrative centre of South Ayrshire and a historic coastal town situated on the Firth of Clyde. The town developed as an important medieval port and market centre and later became a popular seaside resort and regional commercial hub.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Ayr has strong literary connections with Robert Burns, whose birthplace at Alloway lies just south of the town. Ayr's historic centre includes traditional buildings and churches, while the River Ayr and harbour reflect the town's long maritime history.

Ayr Beach and the surrounding coastline provide opportunities for walking, cycling, birdwatching and seaside recreation. Nearby attractions include the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Culzean Castle and Country Park and the historic village of Alloway, while the Ayrshire coast offers extensive scenic routes.

Food and shopping

Ayr has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, seafood restaurants, supermarkets, shopping centres and independent retailers. Ayrshire produce, including beef, dairy products, seafood, cheeses and seasonal farm produce, features strongly in the local food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the coast and Burns Country, while the town's shops and cultural attractions provide year-round interest.
