Beverley is the historic county town and administrative centre of the East Riding of Yorkshire, situated between Hull and the Yorkshire Wolds. The town has Saxon origins and developed around Beverley Minster and its important medieval religious foundation. During the Middle Ages Beverley became a prosperous market and wool-trading centre, leaving a remarkable collection of historic buildings and streets. Today it remains one of East Yorkshire's principal cultural, commercial and administrative centres.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Beverley Minster is the town's outstanding landmark and one of the finest Gothic churches in England, while the smaller St Mary's Church is also notable for its architecture. The historic Saturday and Wednesday markets, medieval streets and attractive Georgian buildings give the town a strong traditional character. Beverley Westwood, an extensive area of open common land beside the town, provides pleasant walking routes and views towards the surrounding countryside. The town is also well placed for visiting Hull, the Yorkshire Wolds and the East Yorkshire coast.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Beverley has an excellent independent food and shopping scene, with cafés, bakeries, traditional pubs, restaurants and specialist shops around the historic centre. Local Yorkshire produce and traditional British dishes are widely available, alongside modern and international cuisine. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the Minster, Westwood and surrounding countryside, although the historic centre is attractive throughout the year. Beverley is an excellent stopping point on routes between Hull and the Yorkshire coast.
