Bridgwater is a historic market and port town in Somerset, situated on the River Parrett at the edge of the Somerset Levels. The town developed as an important medieval trading centre and port, benefiting from access to the Bristol Channel and the agricultural wealth of the surrounding levels. Bridgwater also played a significant role in the English Civil War and later became an industrial centre connected with brickmaking, engineering and other industries. Today it is one of Somerset's principal towns and an important commercial and transport centre.

The historic town centre contains medieval and Georgian buildings, churches and reminders of Bridgwater's long trading history.
