Buckingham is a historic market town in Buckinghamshire situated on the River Great Ouse. The town has medieval origins and developed as an important local market and administrative centre, with its historic streets and buildings reflecting centuries of development. Buckingham was granted a market charter in the Middle Ages and continues to retain a traditional market-town character. Today it is also home to the University of Buckingham and serves as a gateway to the surrounding countryside. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for exploring the historic centre, river walks and nearby rural landscapes.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Buckingham Old Gaol is one of the town's most recognisable historic buildings and now houses a museum exploring local history. The Church of St Peter and St Paul dominates the historic centre, while Buckingham University occupies several historic buildings around the town. The River Great Ouse provides attractive walking routes, and nearby Stowe Gardens is one of the region's most important landscaped gardens and historic estates. Silverstone Circuit is also within convenient reach, providing a major sporting attraction for motorsport enthusiasts.

Food and leisure

Buckingham has cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, independent shops and regular market activity around the town centre. British pub food and local produce are complemented by Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and other international cuisines. Visitors can combine shopping and dining with a walk beside the Great Ouse, a visit to the Old Gaol or an excursion to Stowe Gardens.
