Holyhead, known in Welsh as Caergybi, is the largest town on the Isle of Anglesey and an important port on Holy Island. The town has been a significant maritime and transport centre for centuries, with its modern harbour providing a major ferry connection between Wales and Ireland. Its strategic location at the western edge of Anglesey has shaped its history and economy.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

St Cybi's Church and the ancient Roman walls surrounding the churchyard are important reminders of Holyhead's long history. The town's maritime heritage is closely connected with the port and the expansion of transport links to Ireland during the nineteenth century.

Holyhead Mountain and the surrounding coastal landscape provide some of the most dramatic scenery on Anglesey. South Stack Lighthouse and its surrounding cliffs are particularly popular for walking, birdwatching and views across the Irish Sea. The Anglesey Coastal Path also passes through the area.

Food and shopping

Holyhead has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, supermarkets, independent shops and businesses serving visitors travelling through the port. Welsh seafood, Anglesey lamb, cheeses and other local produce feature in the island's food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring Holyhead Mountain, South Stack and the coastal path, while the town's maritime and transport heritage remains significant throughout the year.
