Chipping Campden is a historic market town in the Cotswolds of Gloucestershire, known for its distinctive honey-coloured limestone buildings and exceptionally well-preserved historic centre. The town prospered during the medieval wool trade, when wealthy merchants funded many of its churches, houses and civic buildings. Its architectural character has made it one of the most recognisable Cotswold settlements.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

The Market Hall, built in the seventeenth century, is one of Chipping Campden's most famous landmarks, while St James' Church contains important evidence of the town's medieval wool wealth. The High Street is lined with traditional Cotswold buildings and historic inns, creating one of the region's most attractive townscapes.

Chipping Campden is also associated with the Arts and Crafts movement through the work of C. R. Ashbee and the Guild of Handicraft. The town is an important starting point for the Cotswold Way, providing access to walking routes through the surrounding hills and villages.

Food and shopping

Chipping Campden has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, delicatessens, galleries and independent craft and speciality shops. Gloucestershire cheeses, local meats, seasonal produce and traditional Cotswold foods feature in the regional cuisine. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for walking the Cotswold Way and exploring nearby villages, while the town's architecture and heritage remain attractive throughout the year.
