Cirencester is a historic market town in Gloucestershire and the largest settlement in the Cotswolds. The town developed from Corinium Dobunnorum, one of Roman Britain's largest towns, and archaeological remains continue to reveal its importance during the Roman period. During the medieval period Cirencester became a prosperous wool and agricultural centre, helping shape its historic streets and buildings. Today the town remains an important commercial and cultural centre for the surrounding Cotswold countryside.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

The Corinium Museum is one of the town's principal attractions and contains extensive collections relating to Roman Britain and local archaeology. Cirencester Park, with its landscaped grounds and historic estate, provides extensive opportunities for walking. The town is surrounded by picturesque Cotswold villages, stone cottages and rolling landscapes that attract visitors throughout the year. Nearby attractions include Bibury, Tetbury and the Cotswold Water Park, while Bath and Oxford are within reach for longer excursions.

Food, shopping and leisure

Cirencester has a strong selection of independent shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs and local food producers. Traditional English food and Cotswold produce feature prominently, alongside modern British and international cuisine. Spring through early autumn is particularly popular for walking and sightseeing, although the town's historic character makes it attractive throughout the year. Cirencester is one of the best practical bases for exploring the central Cotswolds.
