Clay Cross is a town in Derbyshire situated south of Chesterfield. The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution through coal mining, iron production and engineering, with the discovery and exploitation of local mineral resources transforming the settlement. The Staveley and Clay Cross industrial traditions played an important role in the development of the surrounding North East Derbyshire area. Today Clay Cross is primarily a residential and commercial centre, while many former industrial areas have been redeveloped. Its location provides convenient access to Chesterfield, the Peak District and the wider Derbyshire countryside. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for exploring nearby walking routes and historic attractions.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Clay Cross's heritage is closely connected with the coal and iron industries that shaped nineteenth-century Derbyshire. The wider area contains former mine and industrial sites that illustrate the development of the East Midlands coalfield. Nearby attractions include Chesterfield's famous crooked spire, Hardwick Hall and the southern edge of the Peak District National Park. The Five Pits Trail and other former railway and industrial routes provide opportunities for walking and cycling through the surrounding countryside.

Food and leisure

Clay Cross has cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, takeaways and local shops. Derbyshire specialities and traditional British pub food are available alongside modern and international cuisine. Visitors can combine dining in the town with trips to Chesterfield, Hardwick Hall or the Peak District countryside.
