Clayton-le-Moors is a small town in the Hyndburn area of Lancashire, situated between Accrington and the River Calder. The settlement expanded significantly during the Industrial Revolution as cotton spinning, weaving and other textile industries became central to the local economy. Its development was closely connected with the wider industrial towns of east Lancashire, while the surrounding countryside remained largely agricultural. Today Clayton-le-Moors is primarily residential and forms part of the wider urban area around Accrington.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

The town's main historical interest comes from its industrial heritage, with former mills, workers' housing and transport routes reflecting Lancashire's textile past. The nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal provides pleasant walking and cycling opportunities through the Calder Valley. Accrington, Oswaldtwistle and Great Harwood offer additional local heritage and shopping attractions, while Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley are close by. The Forest of Bowland and Pendle Hill provide more extensive countryside and outdoor activities within easy reach.

Food and when to visit

Clayton-le-Moors has local pubs, cafés, takeaways and everyday shops, while nearby Accrington provides a broader selection of restaurants and retail facilities. Traditional Lancashire food, pies, cheeses and hearty pub dishes are common throughout the region. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the canal and surrounding countryside. The town is best included as part of an east Lancashire itinerary rather than treated as a major standalone tourist destination.
