Cromer is a historic seaside town on the north coast of Norfolk and the main administrative centre of North Norfolk. The town developed from a medieval fishing community into a fashionable Victorian resort, helped by the arrival of the railway and the growing popularity of seaside holidays. Its elevated position above the North Sea gives Cromer dramatic coastal views and a distinctive character. Fishing remains part of the town's identity, while tourism and hospitality are now major elements of the local economy.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Cromer Pier is the town's most recognisable landmark and remains home to the historic Pavilion Theatre, making it one of the few traditional seaside piers in Britain with a working theatre. Cromer beach is popular for swimming, walking and traditional seaside activities, while the clifftop promenade provides excellent views along the Norfolk coast. The town is also famous for Cromer crab, a local delicacy associated with the cold, clean waters of the North Sea. Nearby attractions include Felbrigg Hall, Sheringham, the North Norfolk Railway and the wider Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Coastal walking routes provide access to quieter beaches, cliffs and wildlife-rich landscapes.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Seafood is central to Cromer's food culture, with locally caught crab, fish and traditional fish and chips among the most popular choices. The town also has cafés, bakeries, pubs, restaurants and independent shops serving both traditional and contemporary food. Summer is the busiest period and offers the fullest seaside experience, while late spring and early autumn are excellent for coastal walks with fewer crowds. Cromer is particularly attractive as a stop on a North Norfolk coastal route linking Sheringham, Holt, Wells-next-the-Sea and the surrounding villages.
