Dinnington is a small market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, situated close to the Nottinghamshire border. The settlement developed from an agricultural community into an important industrial centre during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Coal mining became central to the local economy, with Dinnington Colliery shaping the town and surrounding communities for much of the twentieth century. Since the closure of the colliery, the area has gradually developed into a primarily residential and service centre.
