Dundee is Scotland's fourth-largest city and is situated on the north bank of the River Tay. The city became prosperous through maritime trade and industries including jute manufacturing, shipbuilding and publishing, giving rise to the traditional description of Dundee as a city of "jute, jam and journalism". In recent decades the waterfront has undergone extensive regeneration, transforming former industrial areas into a modern cultural and leisure district. Dundee is also an important university city with a young and diverse population.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

V&A Dundee is the city's most prominent modern attraction and forms the centrepiece of the regenerated waterfront. The nearby RRS Discovery, the historic Antarctic exploration ship, reflects Dundee's maritime and shipbuilding heritage, while the McManus Art Gallery provides a broader introduction to the city's history and culture. Dundee Law offers panoramic views across the city and River Tay. Nearby attractions include Glamis Castle, the fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife and the coastal landscapes around St Andrews.

Food and leisure

Dundee has a lively food scene with Scottish produce, seafood, cafés, pubs and international restaurants available throughout the city. The waterfront and city centre offer particularly good choices for dining and entertainment. The city is an excellent base for exploring eastern Scotland, with St Andrews, Perth and the Angus countryside within easy reach. Spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the waterfront and surrounding countryside, while Dundee's museums and cultural venues make it suitable for year-round visits.
