Gateshead is a major town in Tyne and Wear situated on the southern bank of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle upon Tyne. The town developed from an early riverside settlement into an important industrial and commercial centre, with coal mining, ironworking and engineering shaping its modern history. Today Gateshead is closely integrated with Newcastle but has its own distinctive cultural identity, with major arts venues, historic landmarks and regenerated riverside districts. The town's elevated position provides impressive views across the Tyne and the Newcastle skyline. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for exploring the riverside, parks and cultural attractions.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is one of the area's most recognisable landmarks, spanning the River Tyne between Gateshead and Newcastle. The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art occupies a converted industrial flour mill on the riverside, while the Sage Gateshead is an important international music and performing arts venue. The Angel of the North, located just south of the town, is another major landmark and one of the most recognisable sculptures in Britain. Saltwell Park provides extensive landscaped gardens and green space, while the wider Tyne Gorge offers attractive walking routes.

Food and leisure

Gateshead has a diverse food scene with restaurants, cafes, traditional pubs, bakeries and independent businesses, particularly around the riverside and town centre. North East produce and traditional British dishes are complemented by cuisines from around the world. Visitors can combine dining with cultural attractions, riverside walks and shopping trips into central Newcastle.
