Grantham is a historic market town in Lincolnshire and the administrative centre of the South Kesteven district. The town developed as an important medieval market and coaching centre before becoming a major railway and industrial town during the nineteenth century. Its long history is reflected in the historic centre and surrounding country estates.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Grantham is strongly associated with Sir Isaac Newton, who attended the King's School, and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was born in the town. The parish church of St Wulfram is one of the town's most prominent landmarks, while nearby Belton House and its landscaped park are major National Trust attractions. The surrounding Vale of Belvoir provides opportunities for walking and exploring historic villages.

The town's railway heritage is also significant, as Grantham has long been an important stop on the East Coast Main Line. Its location between Nottingham and Peterborough makes it a convenient base for exploring the East Midlands and Lincolnshire.

Food and shopping

Grantham has a broad selection of cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, supermarkets and independent shops. Lincolnshire sausages, local cheeses, seasonal vegetables and other regional produce are common features of the local food scene. Spring and summer are particularly suitable for visiting Belton House and the surrounding countryside, while the town's museums and historic buildings provide year-round interest.
