Gravesend is a historic town on the south bank of the River Thames in Kent and the administrative centre of the Gravesham district. Its position on the river made it an important maritime and trading centre for centuries, while its proximity to London strengthened its commercial importance. The town has also been associated with the writer Charles Dickens, who lived nearby and used the surrounding landscape in his work. Today Gravesend combines a busy riverside centre with historic landmarks, modern housing and strong connections to London.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The riverside promenade and historic waterfront are among Gravesend's main attractions, offering views across the Thames and towards the opposite bank. The remains of Milton Chantry and the nearby New Tavern Fort reflect the town's long military history, while St George's Church is associated with Charles Dickens. The nearby village of Cobham contains Cobham Hall and the famous Darnley Mausoleum, surrounded by attractive parkland. Cyclists and walkers can also explore the Thames Estuary and the Kent countryside.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Gravesend has a diverse food scene with cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and international cuisines reflecting the town's multicultural population. The riverside area provides a pleasant setting for dining and walking, while the town centre offers a wide range of everyday shopping. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the waterfront and nearby countryside. Gravesend's excellent transport connections also make it a practical stop on journeys between London, Kent and the Thames Estuary.
