Greenock is a historic port town in Inverclyde, situated on the southern bank of the River Clyde west of Glasgow. The town grew rapidly through maritime trade, shipbuilding and engineering and became one of the most important industrial centres on the Clyde. Its historic waterfront, warehouses, civic buildings and former shipyards reflect this industrial past, while the hills behind the town provide impressive views across the Clyde estuary. Greenock remains an important commercial and residential centre and serves as a gateway towards the coast and the islands of western Scotland. The town's location makes it convenient for exploring the Clyde, Renfrewshire and nearby Argyll. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for coastal walks, sightseeing and scenic excursions.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Greenock's Custom House is one of the town's most important historic buildings and reflects its former importance as an international trading port. The McLean Museum and Art Gallery provides insight into the town's maritime, industrial and cultural history. Greenock Cut, an historic eighteenth-century aqueduct and water supply system, offers a scenic walking route through the hills above the town with views across the Clyde. The Esplanade provides a long waterfront promenade, while nearby Lyle Hill offers panoramic views over the estuary and towards the surrounding landscape.

Food and leisure

Greenock has a wide range of cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and shopping facilities. Scottish seafood, local produce and traditional pub food are prominent features of the regional cuisine. Visitors can combine a meal in the town with a walk along the Esplanade, a visit to the museum or an excursion into the surrounding hills and Clyde coast.
