Hammersmith is a major district in west London within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The settlement developed around the River Thames and expanded rapidly during the nineteenth century as industry, railways and suburban development transformed the area. Hammersmith became an important commercial and transport centre and today contains a mixture of offices, shopping areas, residential neighbourhoods and cultural venues. Its riverside setting remains one of the defining features of the district.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

Hammersmith Bridge and the riverside provide some of the area's most attractive scenery, with paths along the Thames and views towards Fulham and Barnes. The Apollo, now known as the Eventim Apollo, is a major historic entertainment venue, while the Lyric Hammersmith is an important contemporary theatre. Ravenscourt Park offers extensive landscaped grounds, historic buildings and recreational space. The nearby Chiswick House and Gardens and the museums of Kensington are also easily accessible.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Hammersmith has a broad selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs, markets and shops, with international cuisines particularly well represented. King Street, Hammersmith Broadway and the riverside contain many dining and retail options. Late spring through early autumn is especially pleasant for riverside walks and outdoor dining, while the theatres and music venues provide year-round entertainment. Hammersmith is well suited to visitors wanting convenient access to both west London culture and the Thames.
