Harlech is a historic town on the west coast of Wales, situated between Cardigan Bay and the mountains of Eryri. The town developed around Harlech Castle, built by Edward I in the late thirteenth century as part of his campaign to establish English control over Wales. Its elevated position overlooking the surrounding coastal plain gives it an exceptionally dramatic setting.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Harlech Castle is the town's defining landmark and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising the castles and town walls built by Edward I in Gwynedd. The castle's position on a rocky spur provides extensive views towards Cardigan Bay and the mountains of Eryri.

Harlech Beach and the surrounding dunes are part of the wider Morfa Harlech landscape and offer opportunities for walking, birdwatching and coastal recreation. The town is also close to Portmeirion, Barmouth and numerous mountain routes within Eryri National Park.

Food and shopping

Harlech has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, galleries, small shops and local businesses serving residents and visitors. Welsh lamb, beef, seafood, cheeses and seasonal produce feature prominently in the regional food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly popular for exploring the castle, beach and mountains, while Harlech's UNESCO-listed heritage provides year-round interest.
