Hayle is a historic port town in west Cornwall, situated where the Hayle River reaches St Ives Bay. The town grew through maritime trade, shipbuilding and the export of copper and tin from Cornwall's mining districts. Its harbour and industrial heritage played an important role in the development of west Cornwall during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today Hayle combines a residential community with a growing tourism economy based on its beaches, estuary and proximity to St Ives.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Hayle's three miles of sandy beach, particularly Gwithian and the Towans, are among its most attractive features and are popular for walking, surfing and wildlife watching. The Hayle Estuary is an important nature reserve supporting large numbers of birds, especially during migration and winter. The town's harbour and former industrial areas provide reminders of its maritime and mining history. St Ives, Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and the dramatic north Cornish coast are all within easy reach.

Food and when to visit

Hayle has cafés, bakeries, pubs, restaurants and local shops, with Cornish pasties, seafood, cream teas and local produce among the regional specialities. Summer is popular for the beaches, while late spring and early autumn offer excellent conditions for coastal walks with fewer visitors. The estuary and surrounding dunes are also attractive during the cooler months for birdwatching and walking. Hayle is an excellent base for exploring west Cornwall, particularly the area between St Ives, Penzance and the north coast.
