Hornsea is a historic seaside town on the Holderness coast of East Yorkshire, situated between Bridlington and Hull. The town developed from an agricultural and fishing settlement into a popular Victorian seaside resort, helped by the railway and its attractive coastal setting. Hornsea is particularly unusual for its combination of North Sea coastline and Hornsea Mere, the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire. The town also has a strong association with the Hornsea Pottery industry, which became internationally recognised during the twentieth century.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Hornsea beach and promenade are the town's main attractions, offering wide coastal views and opportunities for walking and traditional seaside activities. Hornsea Mere provides a contrasting inland landscape with boating, birdwatching and wildlife, while the surrounding nature reserves are important habitats for coastal and wetland species. The Hornsea Museum and local heritage sites provide insight into the town's fishing, farming and pottery traditions. The nearby East Yorkshire coast offers further attractions, including Bridlington, Flamborough Head and the dramatic chalk cliffs of Bempton.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Fish and chips, seafood, ice cream and traditional seaside cafés are central to Hornsea's visitor experience, alongside pubs, restaurants and independent shops. Local pottery and craft products also reflect the town's distinctive industrial heritage. Summer is the busiest season for enjoying the beach and promenade, while spring and early autumn are particularly good for coastal walks and birdwatching. Hornsea is an excellent stopping point when travelling along the East Yorkshire coast between Hull and Bridlington.
