Hove is a historic coastal town forming the western part of the City of Brighton and Hove. The settlement developed from a small fishing community into a fashionable seaside resort during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when Regency architecture and grand residential developments transformed the waterfront. Hove retains a distinctive identity, characterised by broad avenues, elegant squares, Victorian and Regency buildings and an extensive seafront.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Hove's seafront is its principal attraction, with a long promenade, beach huts, lawns and views across the English Channel. Hove Museum and Art Gallery explores local history, design and art, while the historic Brunswick Square and surrounding Regency architecture illustrate the town's fashionable nineteenth-century heritage. The Hove Lagoon area provides watersports and recreational opportunities. Nearby Brighton offers the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Palace Pier, The Lanes and a wide range of cultural attractions.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Hove has a strong independent food and shopping scene, particularly along Church Road, George Street and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Restaurants and cafés range from seafood and modern British cooking to Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Asian cuisines, with numerous bakeries and specialist food shops. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for enjoying the seafront and outdoor dining, while the city's cultural venues make Hove attractive throughout the year. Hove is particularly suitable for visitors seeking a quieter alternative to central Brighton while remaining close to its major attractions.
