Ilfracombe is a historic seaside town on the north coast of Devon, situated around a natural harbour overlooking the Bristol Channel. The town developed from a small fishing and trading settlement into a fashionable Victorian resort as railways and tourism brought increasing numbers of visitors. Its steep streets, cliffs and harbour give Ilfracombe a distinctive coastal character. Today it remains an important tourist centre and a gateway to the dramatic landscapes of North Devon.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Ilfracombe Harbour is the centre of the town and is surrounded by historic buildings, boats, cafés and restaurants. The famous Victorian Tunnels Beaches provide access to sheltered coves, while the South West Coast Path offers spectacular walks along the cliffs towards Lee Bay and Woolacombe. Verity, the large Damien Hirst sculpture standing at the harbour entrance, has become one of the town's modern landmarks. Exmoor National Park is close by, offering extensive opportunities for walking, wildlife watching and scenic drives.

Food and when to visit

Ilfracombe has a strong seafood tradition alongside fish and chip shops, cafés, traditional pubs, bakeries and restaurants serving modern British and international cuisine. Fresh local seafood and Devon produce are particularly popular during the summer season. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for enjoying the beaches, harbour and coastal paths, although the town has attractions throughout the year. Ilfracombe is an excellent base for exploring Woolacombe, Combe Martin, Exmoor and the wider North Devon coast.
