Kendal is a historic market town in Westmorland and Furness, situated on the River Kent at the southern edge of the Lake District. The town developed as an important medieval market and wool centre, while later industries including textiles, quarrying and the production of Kendal Mint Cake shaped its distinctive identity.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Kendal Castle overlooks the town and is one of its principal historic landmarks.
