Kidsgrove is a town in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, situated close to the Cheshire border and immediately north of Stoke-on-Trent. The town grew during the Industrial Revolution through coal mining, pottery, ironworking and canal transport. Its position on the Trent and Mersey Canal helped connect local industries with the wider network of waterways across the Midlands. Today Kidsgrove is primarily residential, but its industrial heritage and canal landscape remain important features.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Trent and Mersey Canal is one of Kidsgrove's most attractive heritage features, with the nearby Harecastle Tunnel representing an important achievement in Britain's canal history. The surrounding landscape includes former industrial sites that have been transformed into woodland, wetlands and recreational areas. The town is close to the Staffordshire Moorlands and provides convenient access towards the Peak District National Park. Stoke-on-Trent's pottery museums and industrial heritage attractions are also only a short distance away.

Food and when to visit

Kidsgrove has local pubs, cafés, takeaways and restaurants offering traditional British and international food. More extensive shopping and dining facilities are available in nearby Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for canal walks and exploring the surrounding countryside. Kidsgrove's position between Staffordshire and Cheshire makes it a useful stopping point on routes between Stoke-on-Trent, Congleton and the Peak District.
