The town developed as an important settlement on routes through the central Highlands and retains a strong connection with the history and culture of the region. Its dramatic setting among mountains, forests and rivers makes it particularly attractive to outdoor enthusiasts. Kingussie is also close to several important wildlife and heritage attractions.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Ruthven Barracks is one of Kingussie's most prominent historic landmarks, built after the Jacobite rising to control the important Highland route. The nearby Highland Wildlife Park provides opportunities to see native and international species in a large natural setting. The Cairngorms National Park offers extensive opportunities for hiking, cycling, wildlife watching and winter sports, with the Cairngorm Mountain area accessible for mountain activities. Loch Insh, the River Spey and the surrounding forests provide additional opportunities for kayaking, fishing, walking and scenic excursions.

Food and when to visit

Kingussie has cafés, traditional Highland pubs, restaurants and small shops, with Scottish dishes, game and locally sourced produce commonly featured. Nearby Aviemore provides a much larger selection of restaurants, outdoor shops and visitor services. Summer is excellent for hiking, cycling and wildlife watching, while autumn brings spectacular colours to the surrounding forests and winter attracts visitors interested in snow sports and Highland landscapes.
