Lanark is a historic market town in South Lanarkshire, situated on the edge of the Clyde Valley. The town has medieval origins and was once an important royal burgh and market centre. Its population is around 9,000, but its historical importance is considerably greater than its size. Lanark is particularly significant because of its close connection with New Lanark and the wider industrial and natural heritage of the Clyde Valley.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site a short distance from the town, is one of Scotland's most important industrial heritage attractions. Founded as a model cotton-mill community, it preserves historic buildings, exhibitions and the surrounding Falls of Clyde landscape. Lanark itself contains historic streets, churches and remnants of its medieval past, while nearby Castlebank Park provides attractive riverside walks. The Clyde Valley is also known for woodland, orchards, gardens and scenic countryside.

Food and leisure

Lanark has traditional Scottish pubs, cafés, restaurants and independent shops serving the local community and visitors. Regional Scottish produce and traditional dishes are readily available. Spring through early autumn is particularly good for visiting New Lanark, walking beside the Clyde and exploring the surrounding gardens and countryside. Lanark is an excellent stop when travelling between Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Scottish Lowlands.
