Langport is a small historic market town in Somerset, situated on the River Parrett in the heart of the Somerset Levels. Its elevated position above the surrounding wetlands helped make it an important settlement and crossing point for centuries. The town developed as a market and trading centre, with the River Parrett providing an important route for transporting local goods. Today Langport retains a compact historic centre and is surrounded by some of Somerset's most distinctive wetland landscapes.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The historic town centre contains traditional buildings, narrow streets and churches reflecting Langport's long history. Great Bow Bridge and the riverside are among the most characteristic features of the town, while the elevated churchyard provides views across the Somerset Levels. The surrounding wetlands are excellent for walking, cycling and birdwatching, with the Avalon Marshes and nearby nature reserves particularly rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts. Glastonbury, Street and the historic town of Somerton are all within easy reach.

Food and when to visit

Langport has cafés, traditional pubs, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with Somerset cider, cheeses and locally produced food commonly available. Spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the riverside and surrounding wetlands, while the area is particularly interesting for birdwatching during migration and winter. Langport is a peaceful alternative to the larger Somerset tourist destinations. It works well as a stop between Taunton, Glastonbury and the Somerset Levels.
