Leek is a historic market town in Staffordshire, situated on the southern edge of the Peak District National Park. The town developed as a market and textile centre, particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when silk and other textile industries played an important role in the local economy. Its wealth during this period produced many distinctive historic buildings and streets that remain visible today. Leek is now the principal town of the Staffordshire Moorlands and an important gateway to the southern Peak District.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Leek's historic centre contains attractive Georgian and Victorian buildings, independent shops and traditional market streets, while the Nicholson Institute and local museums provide insights into the town's industrial and cultural history. The nearby Roaches, a dramatic rocky ridge, are among the most spectacular natural attractions in the Staffordshire Moorlands and are popular with walkers and climbers. Rudyard Lake offers boating, walking and peaceful waterside scenery, while the Peak District provides extensive opportunities for hiking and cycling. Alton Towers is also within driving distance for visitors seeking a major family attraction.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Leek has a lively independent food and shopping scene, with cafés, bakeries, restaurants, traditional pubs and local markets. Staffordshire and the Peak District provide a range of regional produce, cheeses and traditional dishes. Late spring through early autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the surrounding hills and moorland, while the town's historic centre remains attractive throughout the year. Leek is an excellent base for combining traditional market-town sightseeing with the landscapes of the Peak District.
