Leigh-on-Sea is a historic coastal town forming part of the City of Southend-on-Sea in Essex. The settlement has medieval origins and developed around fishing, boatbuilding and trade on the Thames Estuary. Leigh Old Town retains much of the character of the historic fishing community, while Victorian and later development created a larger residential and seaside town around it. The waterfront remains central to Leigh's identity.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Leigh Old Town is the town's principal historic attraction, with narrow streets, traditional pubs, old fishing buildings and views across the estuary. Bell Wharf provides a popular waterfront setting, while Leigh Heritage Centre explores the town's maritime and social history. Chalkwell Park and the seafront offer attractive green and coastal spaces, and nearby Southend provides access to the famous pier and wider seaside attractions. The Thames Estuary also provides opportunities for birdwatching and coastal walking.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Leigh-on-Sea has a particularly strong independent food and shopping scene, with seafood restaurants, cafés, pubs, bakeries, delis and specialist shops concentrated around Leigh Broadway and the Old Town. Local seafood and traditional British dishes are especially popular. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the waterfront, parks and estuary, while the restaurants and independent shops make the town attractive throughout the year. Leigh-on-Sea is particularly suited to visitors seeking maritime heritage and a more characterful alternative to larger seaside resorts.
