Lewes is a historic county town in East Sussex situated on the River Ouse and surrounded by the South Downs. The town has a long history dating from the Saxon period and became an important Norman administrative, commercial and cultural centre.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Lewes Castle and the adjacent Barbican House Museum are among the town's principal historic attractions. The remains of Lewes Priory provide further evidence of its medieval importance, while the historic streets contain numerous timber-framed, Georgian and Victorian buildings. Lewes is also famous for its annual Bonfire Night celebrations, one of the largest and most distinctive in Britain.

The surrounding South Downs provide extensive opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife watching. The River Ouse offers scenic routes through the valley, while nearby attractions include Charleston, Glyndebourne and the coastal towns of Newhaven and Brighton.

Food and shopping

Lewes has a strong selection of cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, delis, farm shops, antique shops, galleries, bookshops and independent boutiques. Sussex produce, including local cheeses, meats, seafood, wines and seasonal fruit and vegetables, features prominently in the local food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the South Downs and historic sites, while Lewes's cultural calendar and independent businesses make it attractive throughout the year.
