London is the capital and largest city of the United Kingdom and one of the world's most influential metropolitan centres. Founded by the Romans as Londinium, the city grew into a major medieval trading centre before becoming the political and commercial heart of England and later the British Empire. Its long history has left an extraordinary mixture of Roman remains, medieval churches, royal palaces, Victorian architecture and modern skyscrapers. Today London is a global centre for finance, politics, culture, media, education, technology and international business.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

London contains an exceptional concentration of historic and cultural attractions, including the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and St Paul's Cathedral. The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben form one of the world's best-known cityscapes, while the British Museum, National Gallery and Natural History Museum contain internationally important collections. The Thames provides a central thread through the city, with attractions ranging from Tower Bridge and the South Bank to Greenwich and its maritime heritage. London's many parks, historic neighbourhoods, markets and galleries mean that even extended visits rarely cover everything the city has to offer.

Food, shopping and leisure

London has one of the world's most diverse food scenes, ranging from traditional British pubs and afternoon tea to restaurants representing almost every major cuisine. Borough Market, Chinatown, Brick Lane and the many neighbourhood markets provide particularly varied culinary experiences. Shopping ranges from luxury stores around Mayfair and Knightsbridge to independent boutiques, vintage shops and large markets. London is worth visiting throughout the year, although spring and early autumn are particularly comfortable for sightseeing, while its museums, theatres and indoor attractions make it suitable in every season.
