Louth is a historic market town in Lincolnshire situated at the western edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The town developed as an important medieval market and trading centre, benefiting from its position between the agricultural Wolds and the coastal plain. Louth's skyline is dominated by the tall tower of St James's Church, while its streets contain a rich collection of Georgian and Victorian buildings. Today the town remains an important local commercial and cultural centre and a popular base for exploring the Wolds. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for exploring the historic centre and surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

St James's Church is Louth's defining landmark, possessing one of the tallest medieval church spires in England and dominating views across the town and surrounding countryside. Louth Museum explores local history, archaeology and the development of the town, while the historic market place remains an important feature of the centre. The Lincolnshire Wolds provide extensive walking and cycling opportunities, with rolling hills, villages and agricultural landscapes surrounding the town. Nearby Cadwell Park is a major motorsport venue situated within the Wolds.

Food and leisure

Louth has cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, delicatessens and independent shops, with a particularly strong traditional market-town character. Lincolnshire produce, local meats, cheeses and traditional British dishes are widely available alongside Indian, Italian and other international cuisines. Visitors can combine shopping and dining with a visit to St James's Church, the museum or walks through the Lincolnshire Wolds.
