Luton is one of the largest towns in Bedfordshire and an important urban centre in the south-east of England. The settlement has ancient origins, with evidence of prehistoric and Roman activity in the surrounding area, while its medieval prosperity was closely associated with agriculture and the production of straw hats. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Luton expanded rapidly through manufacturing, particularly the motor industry and engineering, transforming it into a major industrial town. Today it is a diverse and internationally connected town located approximately 30 miles north of central London.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Luton's major attractions include Wardown House Museum and Gallery, set in attractive parkland, and Stockwood Discovery Centre, which explores local history, transport, crafts and gardens. The town is also close to the Chiltern Hills, offering opportunities for walking and cycling through attractive chalk landscapes. Luton Hoo, a grand country estate just outside the town, is another important local landmark with extensive grounds and a long history. The town's multicultural communities also give it a distinctive character, with cultural events, independent businesses and restaurants representing cuisines from around the world.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Luton has an unusually diverse food scene, with South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Caribbean and European cuisines alongside traditional British food. The town centre offers extensive shopping, while independent businesses and restaurants can be found throughout the surrounding neighbourhoods. Spring and summer are particularly suitable for exploring the nearby Chiltern countryside and country estates. Luton's excellent rail connections to London and its international airport also make it a significant transport gateway for the wider region.
