Macclesfield is a historic market town in Cheshire, situated on the western edge of the Peak District and close to the border with Derbyshire. The town grew prosperous through the textile industry, particularly silk manufacturing, which became central to its economy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Evidence of this heritage can still be found in historic buildings and former mill sites around the town. Today Macclesfield is one of the principal towns of east Cheshire, combining a busy commercial centre with easy access to the surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Macclesfield's historic centre contains traditional streets, churches and buildings connected with its industrial past, while the Silk Museum explores the town's important textile heritage. The nearby Macclesfield Forest and reservoirs provide attractive walking and cycling opportunities, and the Peak District begins almost immediately to the east. Tegg's Nose Country Park offers panoramic views over Cheshire, while the nearby villages of Alderley Edge and Bollington provide further opportunities for exploring the countryside. Chatsworth, Buxton and the central Peak District are also accessible by road.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Macclesfield has a diverse selection of cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and independent shops, with Cheshire produce and modern British cuisine widely represented. The town's markets and independent businesses add to its lively local character. Late spring through early autumn is particularly good for walking in the Peak District and surrounding countryside, while the historic and cultural attractions can be enjoyed throughout the year. Macclesfield is especially convenient for combining urban sightseeing with trips into the Peak District.
