Mansfield is the principal town and administrative centre of the Mansfield district in Nottinghamshire. The town has medieval origins and developed as an important market centre before expanding rapidly during the Industrial Revolution through coal mining, textiles and manufacturing. The surrounding coalfield shaped Mansfield's economy and landscape for generations, although most mining has now disappeared. Today Mansfield is a major retail, employment and service centre for north Nottinghamshire.
