Maryport is a historic harbour town on the Cumbrian coast overlooking the Solway Firth. The settlement has strong Roman origins, developing around a fort and coastal settlement associated with the Roman frontier. In later centuries Maryport became an important port, shipbuilding centre and coal-trading town, with its harbour connecting the local economy to wider markets. Today the town retains a distinctive maritime character and provides access to the Solway Coast and western Cumbria. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for exploring the waterfront, Roman remains and coastal scenery, while the wide skies and sunsets can be especially striking in the evening.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Maryport Roman Settlement and the Senhouse Roman Museum are the town's most important historic attractions, preserving evidence of the Roman coastal fort and its role in the frontier system. The harbour and promenade provide views across the Solway Firth towards Scotland, while the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers extensive opportunities for walking and wildlife watching. The nearby Lake District provides further opportunities for mountain, lake and countryside excursions, while the historic town of Cockermouth is within easy reach.

Food and leisure

Maryport has cafes, seafood restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, takeaways and independent shops serving the local community. Cumbrian produce, local seafood and traditional British dishes are widely available. Visitors can combine dining beside the harbour with a visit to the Roman museum, coastal walks or excursions into the wider Solway and Lake District landscapes.
