Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire, situated in a narrow valley along the River Derwent on the southern edge of the Peak District. The town developed as a spa resort during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and became an important administrative and tourist centre for the county. The historical and tourist importance of the town
Matlock Bath, immediately south of Matlock, preserves much of the area's historic spa character and is one of the region's best-known visitor destinations. The Heights of Abraham provides panoramic views across the Derwent Valley and can be reached by cable car from Matlock Bath. Nearby Chatsworth House is one of England's most important country estates, with extensive gardens and parkland. The Peak District National Park surrounds the wider area with walking routes, limestone landscapes and scenic villages. Matlock itself also contains historic civic buildings, museums and riverside walks.
