Midsomer Norton is a historic market town in the Somer Valley, around ten miles south-west of Bath. The town developed along the River Somer and has medieval origins, with markets and fairs playing an important role in local life for centuries. From the eighteenth century onwards, the discovery and exploitation of coal transformed Midsomer Norton into an important industrial centre. The local coalfield shaped the town's economy, landscape and identity for generations.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The historic High Street, Market Square and surviving churches provide a glimpse into the town's medieval and industrial past. The former railway heritage is also significant, with the restored Midsomer Norton South station now associated with the Somerset and Dorset Railway heritage. The surrounding Somer Valley offers attractive countryside, walking routes and views towards the Mendip Hills. Midsomer Norton is also well placed for excursions to Bath, Wells, Bristol and other historic settlements across Somerset.

Food, shopping and when to visit

The town centre has independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants where visitors can enjoy traditional British food as well as contemporary options. Spring and summer are particularly suitable for exploring the surrounding countryside, while local events and markets provide additional reasons to visit throughout the year. Midsomer Norton is especially useful as a quieter base for discovering Bath and the wider Somerset countryside.
