The town grew rapidly during the nineteenth century following the development of iron ore mining and ironmaking at nearby Hodbarrow. Its industrial past remains an important part of local identity, while the surrounding coastline and countryside provide a strong natural attraction.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Millom is closely associated with the Hodbarrow ironworks and mining landscape, while the nearby Hodbarrow Nature Reserve provides an important habitat for birds and other wildlife. The Duddon Estuary offers dramatic coastal scenery and views towards the Lake District fells. Nearby attractions include the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Muncaster Castle and the western valleys of the Lake District.

The town is also associated with the poet Norman Nicholson, whose work frequently reflected the industrial and coastal landscapes of the area. The surrounding coast and fells provide opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife watching.

Millom has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, local shops and everyday services serving the surrounding communities. Cumbrian meats, cheeses, seafood and locally produced foods are important features of the regional cuisine. Spring and summer are particularly suitable for exploring the coast and nearby Lake District landscapes, while the industrial heritage and local museums provide year-round interest.
