Milton Keynes is a modern city in Buckinghamshire that was designated as a new town in the 1960s and planned on a large scale to accommodate population growth in southern England. Unlike most British cities, it was designed around a network of grid roads, landscaped boulevards, extensive parks and separate pedestrian and cycling routes. The city has grown into an important economic centre with major employers in technology, retail, finance, logistics and professional services. Its location between London, Oxford, Cambridge and Birmingham has contributed strongly to its continued growth.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

Milton Keynes offers a different type of urban sightseeing from historic British cities, with modern architecture, public art and large landscaped areas forming much of its character. Bletchley Park is the area's most important historical attraction and was the wartime home of the codebreakers who worked on German communications. Campbell Park, Willen Lake and the Grand Union Canal provide extensive opportunities for walking, cycling and outdoor activities. The city is also home to the National Museum of Computing and numerous cultural and entertainment venues.

Food, shopping and leisure

Central Milton Keynes has a large selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs and shops, with the Centre:MK forming the main shopping destination. The city's diverse population has created a broad international food scene alongside familiar British cuisine. Willen Lake offers water sports and leisure activities, while Xscape provides indoor skiing and other entertainment. Milton Keynes is suitable for visits throughout the year and is particularly convenient for travellers looking for a modern base between London, Oxford and the Midlands.
