Nelson is a town in Lancashire situated at the foot of Pendle Hill in the South Pennines. The town expanded dramatically during the Industrial Revolution as cotton spinning and weaving transformed a previously rural landscape into one of East Lancashire's major manufacturing centres. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal played an important role in transporting raw materials and finished goods, while the railway further strengthened Nelson's industrial connections. Today the town remains an important commercial centre and gateway to the surrounding Pennine landscape. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for exploring the canal, nearby villages and the slopes of Pendle Hill.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Nelson's historic mills and terraces reflect its transformation during the Lancashire cotton industry. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the town and provides attractive walking and cycling routes. Pendle Hill is the dominant natural landmark and offers extensive hiking opportunities and panoramic views across Lancashire and Yorkshire. Nearby Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford explores the local history of the area, while the villages around Pendle provide numerous examples of traditional stone architecture.

Food and leisure

Nelson has a broad selection of restaurants, cafes, traditional pubs, bakeries, specialist food shops and independent retailers. Lancashire cuisine is represented alongside a particularly diverse range of South Asian, Middle Eastern and other international cuisines. Visitors can combine shopping and dining in the town with canal-side walks or excursions onto Pendle Hill and into the surrounding villages.
