Newcastle-under-Lyme is a historic market town in Staffordshire, situated immediately west of Stoke-on-Trent. The town developed around a medieval castle and market and became an important commercial centre for the surrounding countryside. During the Industrial Revolution it became closely connected with the pottery, mining and manufacturing industries of the wider North Staffordshire region. Today Newcastle-under-Lyme combines a traditional market-town centre with modern shopping, education and residential areas.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The historic market area and the Guildhall provide reminders of Newcastle-under-Lyme's long commercial history, while the nearby Brampton Museum explores local art, archaeology and social history. Keele Hall and its extensive grounds are located just outside the town and provide attractive parkland scenery. The wider Staffordshire Potteries region offers museums and former industrial sites, including the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. Trentham Estate, with its gardens, lake and shopping village, is also within easy reach.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Newcastle-under-Lyme has a broad selection of cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and shops, with a mixture of independent businesses and national retailers. The surrounding Staffordshire area is known for traditional dishes and local produce, while Stoke-on-Trent provides further dining and cultural options. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for visiting parks and historic estates, although the museums and town centre can be enjoyed throughout the year. Newcastle-under-Lyme is a useful base for exploring Staffordshire, the Potteries and the southern edge of Cheshire.
