Pembroke Dock is a historic port town on the northern shore of the Milford Haven Waterway in Pembrokeshire, west Wales. The town grew rapidly from the early nineteenth century around a major Royal Navy dockyard established by the Admiralty. Shipbuilding and naval activity shaped the town for generations, and its waterfront remains central to its identity. Today Pembroke Dock is an important local centre and a major transport gateway for ferry services across the Irish Sea.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The former Royal Dockyard is the most important part of Pembroke Dock's heritage, with surviving dockyard buildings and fortifications providing reminders of its naval past. Pembroke Castle, one of Wales's most impressive medieval castles, is only a short distance away, while the historic town of Pembroke offers attractive streets and buildings. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park surrounds the area with dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and coastal walking routes. Tenby, Carew Castle, Freshwater West and the coastal villages of south Pembrokeshire are all accessible for day trips.

Food and when to visit

Pembroke Dock has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, takeaways and local shops, while nearby Pembroke and Milford Haven provide additional choices. Welsh produce, seafood and traditional British dishes are common throughout the region. Late spring through early autumn is particularly good for exploring the Pembrokeshire coast, although the historic attractions can be visited throughout the year. Pembroke Dock is especially useful as a base or stopover for travellers using the ferry connections to Ireland.
