Penzance is a historic seaside town in west Cornwall, situated at the head of Mount's Bay and facing the English Channel. The town grew as a maritime and trading centre and became a fashionable resort during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its harbour, promenade and Georgian and Victorian architecture reflect this long history, while its position at the western end of the railway network has made it an important gateway to Cornwall. Penzance remains one of the principal centres of west Cornwall and a popular base for exploring the far southwest.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The seafront promenade and historic harbour provide some of Penzance's most characteristic views, with Mount's Bay stretching towards St Michael's Mount. The town contains several notable historic buildings, including the Egyptian House and the Market House, while Penlee House Gallery and Museum explores local art and history. Nearby Newlyn is famous for its fishing and artistic heritage, and Mousehole provides a picturesque harbour setting. St Michael's Mount, Land's End, Sennen Cove and the Minack Theatre are among the major attractions within easy reach.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Penzance has a diverse food scene including seafood restaurants, traditional pubs, cafés, bakeries, Cornish pasty shops and international cuisine. The town centre and seafront offer a mixture of independent shops, galleries and local businesses. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the coast and nearby attractions, although Penzance's cultural and historic attractions make it suitable for visits throughout the year. Its railway station and transport connections also make Penzance one of the most convenient bases for exploring western Cornwall without a car.
