Poole is a major coastal town on the south coast of England and forms part of the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation. The town is centred on Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and has a long history of maritime trade, fishing and shipbuilding. Today Poole combines a busy modern waterfront with historic streets, beaches, marinas and extensive coastal landscapes. Sandbanks and the beaches of Poole Bay are among the area's best-known attractions, while the harbour provides opportunities for sailing, boating and island excursions. Poole is also a convenient gateway to the Isle of Purbeck and the Jurassic Coast. Summer is especially popular for beach activities, while spring and autumn are excellent for walking and sightseeing.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Poole Harbour is the town's defining natural feature and supports a wide range of maritime and recreational activities. Poole Old Town contains historic buildings and streets reflecting the town's centuries of commercial development, while Poole Museum explores local archaeology, maritime history and the natural environment. The nearby Sandbanks peninsula is famous for its beaches and views across the harbour entrance. Brownsea Island, located within Poole Harbour, is an important nature reserve and historic site accessible by boat. The wider Purbeck peninsula and Jurassic Coast provide some of southern England's most spectacular coastal scenery.

Food and leisure

Poole has an extensive selection of restaurants, cafes, traditional pubs, seafood establishments, bakeries and independent shops. Fresh seafood and Dorset produce are prominent in the local cuisine, alongside British and international dining. Visitors can combine waterfront dining with harbour cruises, beach activities, walks around the Old Town or boat trips to Brownsea Island.
