Poplar is a historic district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, situated beside the River Thames and the former West India Docks. The area grew rapidly from the seventeenth century as a centre associated with shipbuilding, maritime trade and the East India Company. The docks shaped Poplar's economy and identity for centuries, while twentieth-century redevelopment and the growth of Canary Wharf transformed the wider Docklands landscape.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

Poplar is closely connected with London's docklands heritage, with the nearby Museum of London Docklands documenting the history of the Thames, port and surrounding communities. Chrisp Street Market remains an important local shopping and community centre, while All Saints Church provides a historic landmark. Bartlett Park and the Limehouse Cut offer green and waterside spaces for walking. Canary Wharf, with its modern architecture, public art and riverside setting, is immediately nearby, while the Thames Path provides longer walking routes along the river.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Poplar has a diverse food scene reflecting the multicultural character of east London, with South Asian, Caribbean, Turkish, Middle Eastern, British and international restaurants and takeaways. Chrisp Street Market provides everyday shopping and food stalls, while Canary Wharf offers a much larger selection of restaurants and retail outlets. Late spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the waterways and Thames Path, although the museums, markets and Docklands attractions make Poplar suitable for visits throughout the year.
